Young Adults Taking a Chance Without Health Insurance

It seems like yesterday I was in my twenties. I remember being in college and having my appendix out - the last thing on my mind as they were wheeling me into the operating room was how to pay for the surgery. Being twenty and not-so-aware of money management, I had a vague feeling that my parents would pay the bills, or that my limited college health insurance plan would take care of things. Thankfully, things worked out fine. My parents had a good policy that still covered me, and all we (they) had to pay was a $250. deductible. But, as a slightly older adult, I made many decisions to go without healthcare coverage, naively believing I’d never get sick. In my mind, I could either spend $300 a month for a policy, or spend the $300 paying my college and car loans. In the article “Many Young Adults Staying Uninsured”, a Bismark Tribune writer cites:

More than 25 percent of adults ages 18 to 34 are uninsured, says the 2008 State of the States report from State Coverage Initiatives, a national program that works with states to improve the availability and affordability of health care coverage.
